Risk Management (Discussion)

I agree that businesses are becoming more aware of the importance of Risk Management. It is all part of planning ahead for the survival of a business – having insurance policies or strategies in place to take care of potential situations that could be devastating to businesses. However, far too often small businesses do not plan enough or take the time to put the necessary strategies in place to prevent disasters on a daily and long-term basis. Do you think there is sufficient exposure for this component of business planning – especially for small businesses?

In the current crisis here in Brazil, what I have observed is that although companies have specific areas of risk and trained personnel are experiencing huge losses in derivatives, where is the flaw in the control or the bad management of directors? In small businesses especially the problem is minor because the decision is centralized in few people.

I agree with your point that the need for planning in small businesses ”...is minor because the decision is centralized in few people.” However, they can still be left out in the “cold” if there was no pre-planning in regards to risk management – as there may not be anything to take them over the bad period of a disastrous event if there was no insurance coverage, etc.
